God Cares About Your Emotions: How Journaling Can Help You Understand Your Feelings and Grow Closer to God

ree

Even when you feel far from God or far away from His love, remember this: He sees you. He loves you. And He welcomes you—just as you are—to bring your whole heart to Him. Your feelings matter to Him, and He stays close to you through everything you face.

Everyone faces hard times and strong feelings. These hard times often lead us to want to understand more, find comfort, and connection. Life can be hard, and our feelings can bring us closer to God—they can be the very place where we meet Him most closely.

If you want a full guide on how to use journaling as a tool to grow closer to God, read my post: How Christian Journaling Helps You Deepen Your Relationship with God. This tool is open to everyone—no experience needed, just a heart ready to come close and be honest with Him.

Scripture Welcomes All Our Feelings

The Bible, especially the Psalms, shows many feelings—from deep sadness and pain to great joy and praise. No matter what we feel, we can still trust God. We can remember who He is, what He has promised, and how kind and good He is. God is always with us. He is our safe place, our hope, and the one who saves us.

God Is Close When You Are Struggling

God is always near. He sees your pain and comes close when you feel hurt or weak. Your feelings matter to Him. He stays with you through everything and welcomes you to share what’s on your mind and in your heart.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Even when problems stay for a while, God stays close to you. He sees what you carry and hears you. He is kind, powerful, and full of love.

Change and healing take time. Every time you talk to God about what you’re going through—even when it’s hard—you take a step toward healing. Feeling better can take time, but God is with you and is working in your life.

Journaling: A Tool to Deepen Your Relationship with God

Journaling goes beyond just writing about your feelings—it can help you grow spiritually. When you use it with purpose, journaling helps you bring your fears, joys, questions, and struggles to God’s truth. It’s a way to think deeply and grow closer to Him.

Journaling works alongside the Bible and prayer—it supports them. It gives you space to think about Scripture, say thank you, be honest with God, and see how God is working in your life.

How Journaling Helps You

  • Notice your feelings—like worry, anger, or sadness—and bring them to God’s truth.

  • Take a moment to see how God is helping you feel calm and peaceful inside.

  • See where it may be hard to trust God with your feelings.

  • Look back and remember how God has helped you, even in hard times.

How to Journal Your Feelings and Bring Them to God

  1. Say exactly how you feel—share everything openly with God.

  2. Think about what caused this feeling—ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand.

  3. Bring your feeling to God in prayer—give it to Him.

  4. Read a Bible verse that fits your situation and write about it.

  5. Ask God to heal you and help you see the truth.

  6. End with worship and/or giving it all to God—even when feeling better comes little by little.

Example journal prompt:

“God, today I feel _____. I want to share it all with You. Please help me see what You see. Help me understand what is going on in my heart. Is there something deeper You want to show me? What truth do You want me to believe instead of this lie?”

Feelings Are Special and Helpful — How We Think About Them Matters

It’s normal to feel many things. How we understand and handle our feelings matters. Faith means trusting God with what you truly feel and being honest with Him.

1 Peter 5:7 says, “Give all your worries to Him because He cares for you.” You can share your hard feelings with God. Journaling helps you bring those feelings to God and trust His care.

Final Encouragement

God sees you. He knows what you’re going through. He walks with you in every moment. He loves you deeply—just as you are. Journaling is a tool to help you stay close to that truth—bringing your feelings in line with God’s Word and your heart in step with His plan.
